Scarcity, Strategy, and Setbacks: Lessons from the Omega-3 Supply Crisis
This presentation will explore how the omega‑3 industry navigated the recent crude fish oil shortage, highlighting the diverse strategies companies employed, from reallocating inventory and adjusting formulations to accelerating the shift toward higher‑concentrate, algae‑based, and alternative omega‑3 sources. It will also examine the broader market consequences of the 2024 crude oil price spike, which created significant inflationary pressure across the value chain and, according to consumption data, erased years of progress in increasing global omega‑3 intake. Together, these dynamics offer important lessons on resilience, supply‑chain fragility, and how short‑term supply shocks can reshape long‑term demand, pricing power, and consumer access in the omega‑3 sector.

European Fishmeal and Fish Oil: Supply Outlook and Production Expectations
Europe remains a significant and strategically important supplier of fishmeal and fish oil to global markets. However, supply dynamics are increasingly shaped by biological variability, quota decisions, and political negotiations affecting access to key pelagic stocks.
This presentation will provide an updated overview of 2025 production performance and expectations for 2026, including likely raw material availability, quota proposals, and stock developments across the North Atlantic and Baltic regions. Particular attention will be given to developments in the Coastal States negotiations, and how these influence overall European supply volumes.
The session will also examine how regulatory developments may impact production capacity, market positioning, and competitiveness of European marine ingredients.
The objective is to provide a clear and realistic assessment of European supply prospects and the factors that will shape production stability and market availability in the coming year.

Better or burdened - What you need to know today about MOH and EPA/DHA omega-3 oils
Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) constitute a prime example of the high complexity in finding a balance between the perceived need for consumer health protection and the operative limits of a developed food industry. Considering regulatory developments on MOH that are still in the process of being fully established, GOED has undertaken various activities in the past few years to understand and manage the impact of these contaminants in the EPA/DHA omega-3 oils value chain. Examples will be shown of progress made in tackling this intricate class of contaminants affecting our sector at multiple levels. On the other hand, challenges remain. In this presentation we will take a detailed look at where our sector finds itself today and question ourselves if MOH control makes us better or burdened.

Animal By-Products – a valuable part of a sustainable circular economy
Returning animal by-products back into the feed chain is the closing of the loop in a circular economy, one of the common goals of the Green Deal and facilitating Europe´s fat and protein resilience. Like fish meals and fish oils are proteins and fats from land animals valuable and sustainable resources in animal feeding. In Europe, feed grade proteins and fats are produced from by-products of healthy slaughtered animals and by standardised and approved processing methods. Safe sourcing and processing as well as full traceability and transparency at all stages guarantee feed ingredients of high safety.
Land animal proteins are used in aquafeed worldwide and pose a natural source of essential amino acids. The use of processed animal proteins from non-ruminant animals in aquafeed is allowed in the EU for many years, since 2021 also in the feeding of pig and poultry.
The presentation will give an overview about the European rendering industry, its markets and new potentials.

Recent developments and future trends in fed aquaculture
Fed aquaculture is still experiencing growth, albeit at a lower growth rate then seen be over the past years. And, during the past year – there have been other species and sectors than one should expect, that has provided the strongest growth in aqua feed consumption.
In addition, 2025 has provided sufficient new obstacles to some of the aquaculture sectors. Warmwater shrimp, farmed salmon, tilapia and catfish are all to some degree important in the US market, and with import tariffs ranging from notable to destructive, it has caused impacts on trade flows, market distribution and on production. The presentation will capture some of these major and recent trends, while still keeping track of the long lines in aquaculture.

Threats to marine fish stocks and sustainable harvest
The harvest of small pelagic fishes for both fish meal and fish oil and for human consumption has been globally fairly stable in recent decades with declines in some regions and species mostly compensated by increases in others. But several factors including a warming ocean, international efforts to bypass existing fisheries management institutions and for coastal species threats from terrestrial runoff are posing major threats to the continued supply of these fish. In this talk, will explore these challenges and what the fishing industry can do to adapt to them, or prevent them.
