IFFO, The Marine Ingredients Organisation, will host an InFocus webinar on 24 June 2026 entitled “Sustainable Aquafeed? The Devil is in the Detail”, featuring Björn Kok, Technical Lead Sustainability Metrics at Skretting and lead author of an independent study published at the Stirling University. The study examines how changes in aquafeed composition have influenced the environmental footprint of European aquaculture over the past two decades.
Moderated by Dr Brett Glencross, Technical Director at IFFO, the webinar will delve into one of the aquaculture sector’s most pressing questions: how should sustainability be assessed when evaluating feed ingredients and feed formulation strategies?
The study, led by Björn Kok and colleagues, uses Index Decomposition Analysis to investigate the drivers behind changes in environmental impacts associated with aquaculture feeds. Its findings challenge some widely held assumptions about feed sustainability, highlighting the importance of evaluating multiple environmental indicators and understanding the trade-offs that can arise when focusing on a single metric. Recent shifts in feed ingredient composition, including reduced reliance on marine ingredients, were identified as a key factor influencing environmental outcomes.
“As the industry works to reduce its environmental footprint, it is essential that decisions are guided by robust science and a comprehensive understanding of trade-offs. This webinar will provide an opportunity to examine new evidence and discuss how sustainability metrics should be interpreted in the context of aquafeed formulation” said Dr Brett Glencross.
"Reducing dependence on marine resources has been treated as the main environmental sustainability goal in aquaculture. As aquaculture moves forward, let's not repeat the same mistake again: today's sustainability solution can become tomorrow's unintended consequence. Carbon matters, but so do water, land, and other critical trade-offs. We must advance with a good understanding of impacts, so we're not looking back in 20 years asking how we solved one problem by creating another" said Björn Kok.
The webinar forms part of IFFO’s InFocus series, which brings together leading experts to discuss emerging scientific, technical and market developments relevant to the marine ingredients and aquaculture sectors.
